Reviews Summary

While Gallipoli's historic bridge and island old town are visually stunning, many visitors report receiving significant ZTL fines months after their visit due to unclear signage. This has led to a feeling of being taken advantage of, overshadowing the otherwise beautiful experience for some. Reddit+1

"Even though this town has Greek roots – and as a Greek, I’d normally feel some connection – I honestly recommend staying away. It might look charming on the surface, but underneath, it’s just another place that’s found a sneaky way to profit from tourists.

Here’s what happened: about 8 months after our trip, we received a ZTL (restricted traffic zone) fine in the mail.

The real trick? They give you a 10-day window to pay with a 50% discount. That’s their way of pressuring you to pay quickly without asking questions. Most people don’t remember the exact streets they drove on 8 months ago, so they just assume it must be legitimate. “If they’ve got a photo, it must be true,” right? But we’re absolutely sure we didn’t enter any restricted zone; moreover, the reported street is the busiest tourist street in downtown, PONTE S.S. GIOVANNI PAOLO II. The official offense was:
“Unauthorized entrance in a pedestrian area and in a restricted traffic zone.”

And the “proof”? Just a photo of our license plate, part of the car, and some lines on the asphalt — no signs, nothing that actually shows a violation. Total joke.

After talking to family and friends, it turns out two others had the exact same experience in that town. We visited nearly 15 towns and cities on our road trip — only this one pulled this stunt.

Bottom line: skip this place. There are plenty of beautiful, welcoming towns in Italy that don’t treat tourists like walking wallets. Spend your time — and money — somewhere more honest."

"Same mishap too. Received a €114 fine a year later! The signage doesn't seem clear given the number of people in our situation. The budget envelope brought in by these fines must be substantial, really a shame to have the feeling of being taken advantage of in this way."

"It is a bridge connecting with the historic center of the city, made up of 12 stone arches and dating back at least in part to the 1600s. Old Gallipoli, in fact, is a sort of islet, after the Republic of Venice severed the isthmus that connected it to the mainland in 1484.
The aim was to make Gallipoli difficult to conquer and less subject to attacks and depredations by the Turks. This bridge is very suggestive, especially at sunset, looking towards the sea and the Rivellino."
