We finally made the trek up to La Rocca on 25 August 2017.
It had been there overlooking Garda all during our stay, at the same time inviting but also illiciting resistance, because we knew it would be a steep climb, and it was our final full day when we made the effort to do it.
And it was an effort. You join the path just to the right of the church on the main road entering Garda from the Bardolino direction. You rise fairly quickly and steeply. It is quite rocky. We managed okay with trainers but walking boots would have been more comfortable.
It seemed to go on and on, and even daddy asked 'are we nearly there yet?' more than once.
It probably took us about an hour to reach the La Rocca view point, and despite the exertion, it was worth the effort. There are a couple of viewpoints really. One looks down over Garda, and further round a spectacular view of the South of the lake with Bardolino immediately below and Lazise beyond, and looking into the distance you can see distinctly the promontory of Sirmione.
Be careful with your children as the viewpoints had sheer drops but no railings at all.
However, it was a quite spectacular view and we were glad that we'd done it, spilling into the nearest bar when we got back down for beer and other cool drinks."
