What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Grandes Murailles are recognized as a spectacular mountain range for experienced mountaineers, offering a dramatic 'Grand Wall' vista. However, visitors caution that the rock quality can be poor, and it's crucial to distinguish it from any lodging. It's a destination for serious climbers, not casual tourists.
"A disappointment.
I knew the previous Grandes Murailles hotel for many locations there in the past before 2019.
New management added one star.
So from 3 to 4.
But where is this extra star ?
On the contrary. We are in retreat.
The quality of the breakfast is down.
Eg. the bread (homemade it would seem) is a gadget closer to a diet bread.
At the bar at the end of the afternoon, the Prosecco served is rather warm.
A word of advice: take your aperitif elsewhere.
The rooms are fine and Ok - basically the same as before."

"To the previous reviewer. This isn't a hotel review (it's clearly labeled "Grande Muraglia" / "Mountain Peak"), but a series of peaks around 4,000 meters high bordering the Valpelline (to which their western slopes belong), a true "Grandiosa Muraglia" (Grand Wall) that captures the gaze of mountaineers and simply dreamers of mountaineering.
To those who posted irrelevant photos, I'd like to point out that, from the Dent d'Hérens onward, that is, up to the Matterhorn, the peaks Bianca, Carrell, Maquignaz, and Maria Cristina are NOT part of the Grandes Murailles.
Great Wall: Becca di Guin, Les Jumeaux, Punte Lioy, Ester, and Gastaldi (or dei Cors), and finally Punta Margherita.
Beautiful to look at, but the rock is poor.
Photo: it includes them all, the peaks of the Grandes Murailles.
Luckily, there are more peaks than hotels: we're in the mountains :)"

Understanding the 'Grand Wall'
While visually stunning, the rock quality on these peaks can be a significant factor for climbers. Reports suggest that the rock is often poor, meaning climbers need to be extra cautious and well-prepared. This isn't a place for casual exploration; it demands respect for the mountain and a thorough understanding of the risks involved. The peaks within the chain include Becca di Guin, Les Jumeaux, Punte Lioy, Ester, Gastaldi, and Punta Margherita, each offering its own set of challenges and rewards for the determined adventurer.
Mountaineering and Climbing
When planning a climb, it's essential to research specific routes thoroughly. The poor rock quality mentioned by some visitors means that route selection and safety precautions are paramount. Many climbers opt for guided ascents to navigate the complexities and potential hazards of the Grandes Murailles. The reward for such efforts is the unparalleled satisfaction of conquering these magnificent peaks and experiencing the breathtaking high-alpine scenery.
