What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Laghi d'Olbe for its beautiful alpine scenery and the chance to see wildlife, calling it a worthwhile excursion. While not as dramatic as some other Dolomite lakes, the journey through meadows and the serene glacial waters are highly appreciated. Some note the hike's steepness and lack of facilities, advising thorough preparation.
"A beautiful excursion starting from Sappada and taking the chairlift for the initial section. Then a long walk through the enchanting lakes. We may not be at the level of the lake below Croda da Lago above Cortina, which is much more scenic, but it's worth it."
Luigi Ciulli
"Departure from the Rododendro Hut, CAI trail 138. In about two hours, you reach the lakes. Along the way, we encountered a chamois, several roe deer, and marmots!"
Ottavia Campanotto
"Revisited in the summer of 2024 after many years, this time using the CAI 138 trail that starts near the Baita Rododendro (we had previously climbed from Sappada), they have proven to be a beautiful destination, easily accessible with a certain level of fitness. The trail is quite steep in the initial section, but never presents any particular technical difficulties. The gradient eases as the trail reaches the meadows below the summit of Mount Lastroni; here, the scenery opens up majestically, revealing streams, rolling pastures, and truly evocative panoramic views, which can be admired alongside the grazing cattle. You quickly reach the Casera d'Olbe hut and, just beyond, the chapel, behind which lies the largest of three glacial lakes, all close together."

The Hike to Laghi d'Olbe: Routes and Challenges
For those seeking a more strenuous challenge, starting the hike directly from Sappada without the chairlift is an option. This route involves a longer ascent and more significant elevation gain, demanding greater stamina and preparation. Regardless of the starting point, the trails are generally marked with CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) signage, ensuring a relatively straightforward navigation. However, it's crucial to be aware of potential trail disruptions, such as landslides, which have been noted on paths like CAI 141. Always check local conditions before setting out.
Hikers should be prepared for steep sections, particularly in the initial stages of the ascent. The terrain can be uneven, making sturdy hiking boots a non-negotiable item. As you gain altitude, the landscape transforms from forested slopes to open meadows, offering increasingly spectacular panoramic views. The effort is rewarded by the serene beauty of the glacial lakes, making the challenging trek worthwhile for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Experiencing the Alpine Wildlife
Beyond chamois, keep an eye out for roe deer, which are more commonly seen in the forested areas and lower meadows. Marmots, the large ground squirrels native to mountain regions, are also frequent inhabitants of the alpine meadows. Their distinctive whistles can often be heard before they are seen, as they emerge from their burrows to bask in the sun. Observing these animals requires patience and a keen eye, but the reward is a memorable connection with the natural world. Remember to maintain a respectful distance and avoid feeding them, as this can disrupt their natural behaviors and diets.
Photography Tips for Laghi d'Olbe
Utilize a wide-angle lens to encompass the grandeur of the surrounding Dolomites and the expanse of the lakes. For capturing wildlife, a telephoto lens will be invaluable, allowing you to get close-up shots without disturbing the animals. Consider bringing a sturdy tripod for stable shots in low light conditions and to achieve sharp images, especially during dawn or dusk.
Experiment with different vantage points. While the lake shores offer beautiful reflections, climbing to slightly higher elevations can provide breathtaking panoramic views of the entire basin. Don't forget to capture the details too – the textures of the rocks, the wildflowers in the meadows, and the play of light and shadow on the mountains can make for compelling compositions.
