"The Pietra del Pertusillo lake is an artificial reservoir located in the municipalities of Grumento Nova, Montemurro, and Spinoso. The dam was built between 1957 and 1962, damming the Agri River, with funds from the Cassa del Mezzogiorno, which granted the agency for the development of irrigation and land transformation in Puglia and Lucania the right to carry out the work. The reservoir is located 532 meters above sea level and has a maximum capacity of 155 million cubic meters of water, intended for irrigation, hydroelectricity, and drinking water. The dam was built near the Montemurro locality of Pietra del Pertusillo, so called because the river, in that area, flowed between two rocks as if it were a hole. The surrounding landscape is covered with woods that descend to the lake shore (some trees even beyond, being partially submerged by the water). The lake is used for sport fishing and national rowing competitions, as well as being a must-see during the Val d'Agri holiday.
It's a shame that in recent years it has been completely left in disrepair, with abandoned trails and restaurants. There are several areas with large piles of garbage. How shameful and incivility!"

"A magical place! I was there on Sunday 22 October because of the chestnut festival. The climate was fantastic, it was neither too cold nor too hot, only a few clouds passed by a few times but the sun was present and warmed everyone up. Looking at this magnificence of a lake would put anyone at ease. Beautiful, I will definitely return"

The Engineering Marvel: Dam Construction
The construction of such a large dam was a major engineering undertaking for its time. It involved significant earthworks and concrete pouring to ensure structural integrity and water containment. The dam's design and scale are a testament to the era's focus on infrastructure development in Southern Italy. Today, it stands not only as a functional water management system but also as a striking piece of industrial heritage against the natural backdrop of the Val d'Agri.
While the dam's primary functions remain, its presence has also shaped the local landscape and economy. The reservoir has become a focal point for recreation and tourism, despite some challenges with upkeep. The engineering behind its creation is a key aspect of understanding the significance of Lake Pertusillo.
Environmental State and Visitor Experience
Despite these issues, the lake remains a popular spot for activities like sport fishing and has hosted national rowing competitions. The landscape itself, particularly when bathed in the soft light of dawn or dusk, offers a serene and beautiful setting. Visitors who are prepared for the lack of amenities and are mindful of the environmental challenges can still find the lake to be a rewarding destination.
Community discussions on platforms like Reddit often lament the state of disrepair, emphasizing the potential of the area if properly managed. The hope is that increased awareness and local efforts can lead to better preservation and restoration of the lake's surroundings, ensuring its natural beauty can be fully appreciated by future visitors.
