The exhibition detailing its history and the park below offering great views are frequently praised. Some visitors note that while the structure is impressive, more detailed historical interpretation could be beneficial.
"Under the Cathedral.
Located on the Flamina Adriatica consular road, the Diocletian Bridge was built in the late Imperial period by the inhabitants of Anxanum, an ancient city of the Italic Frentani people, corresponding to modern-day Lanciano. Its purpose was to connect the Prato district and the Piano delle Fiere, separated by the Pietrosa ditch. The bridge, which collapsed following the 1088 earthquake, was rebuilt in the 13th century in medieval style. A first chapel dedicated to the Virgin was erected above it, which was restored and expanded in subsequent centuries until it reached the size of the current Cathedral."
ROBERTO RIVIECCIO
"Originally, there was a Roman bridge from the third century dedicated to the Emperor Diocletian. However, the bridge was damaged by an earthquake in the eleventh century and rebuilt in the thirteenth century. Church buildings were gradually built above the bridge and the bridge changed its appearance. It is a large and complex structure overall. On one floor there is an exhibition dedicated to the history of the bridge and various reconstructions. There is a freely accessible park in the valley below the bridge."
