Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Porta Cansignorio as a well-preserved historical gateway to Lazise, offering a glimpse into its medieval past. Its proximity to Lake Garda and the charming lakeside town enhances the experience, though some may find it a brief stop compared to larger attractions.
"Lazise decided to protect itself from incursions with a fortified lakeside promenade and the other three sides protected by a wall, each with a gate and 12 towers.
In 1375, the northern section of the wall was the last to be built, and its gate was dedicated to Cansignorio della Scala, Lord of Verona who had recently died. It is also known as the "New Gate."
In 1701, to improve its defenses, it was walled up and reopened only in 1955.
Between 1375 and 1381, the small castle was also built, but it is privately owned and closed to the public."

"Porta Cansignorio, also called Porta Nuova, is the northern entrance to the medieval walls of Lazise, built immediately after the death of Cansignorio della Scala, around 1375–1376. Originally intended for military purposes, it served as an emergency exit and as a strategic access."

"Along with Porta San Zeno and Porta San Marco, also known as Porta del Lion, it is one of the three gates in the old medieval walls of Lazise, a lakeside town on Lake Garda. As you might expect, once you pass through this gate, you leave the center. Different from the other two, but equally splendid. Nearby is the cozzeria, a restaurant that cooks mussels in a thousand ways."
