What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Doria Castle Loano offers a glimpse into Liguria's medieval past with its restored fortress and charming surrounding village. Visitors appreciate the historical architecture and breathtaking sea views, though some note inconsistencies in upkeep and accessibility. It's a site best visited with confirmed opening times.
"A wonderful medieval village in Liguria.
It dates back to the 12th century, but in 1270 it was purchased by the Doria family, who transformed it into a large fortress.
In 1744, it was bombed, leaving it in ruins.
After extensive restoration, the castle is now open to the public. Visits are available for a fee."

"Doria Castle ..via del Borgo Castello ...Loano. This property dates back to the early 13th century, and is still in excellent condition today and still retains its beauty and charm of a medieval castle. Its interiors still make it unique in its being, and inside it is furnished ..with furniture still from those eras and has a surface area as far as I could understand of 4840 square meters. The entire castle is made up of 3 floors ..with 30 rooms ..11 bedrooms ..8 bathrooms ..a beautiful billiard room ..a large hall ..plus the family chapel ..inside there are also the ancient prisons, and a spacious and very interesting service area. The entire property is completely surrounded by a large park ..plus a small medieval village still very well maintained. We can say that we are... inside a true piece of history in Western Liguria... immersed in tranquility, with a breathtaking sea view... and very close to the city center."

"The village is beyond disappointing; it has nothing ancient about it; it has been renovated, preserving almost nothing of the original. As for the castle, it was not possible to visit because it is closed, but from what we could see from the outside, it seems to have been abandoned for years, with a neglected garden. No one answers the bell at the gate! I later discovered it is a FAI site, fortunately the other sites are not in such a state of neglect. I can't say anything about the interior. A real shame after the walk required to get there; finding at least two signs from the entrance would be helpful."
