"Porta Sant'Angelo – The Renaissance Gate of Manduria
At the western entrance to Manduria, like a stone guardian guarding centuries of history, stands the Porta Sant'Angelo, also called Porta Napoli. This majestic arch, erected towards the end of the 16th century, was once the main gateway into the city for those arriving from Taranto or Naples.

With its Renaissance lines and harmonious proportions, the Porta Sant'Angelo reflects the elegant sobriety of its time. In the mid-17th century, the inhabitants of Manduria enhanced it with three figures sculpted in the local golden tufe stone: in the center, the Immaculate Virgin, taller than the others, stands as a symbol of purity and protection; beside her, Saint Gregory the Great and Saint Charles Borromeo, patrons of wisdom and faith, watch over the city and its harvests.

Above the arch, an engraved inscription proudly proclaims: Manduria Restituta —Manduria Restored—. With these words, the city celebrated the recovery of its ancient name in 1789, after centuries of being known as Casalnuovo. That phrase became an emblem of identity and rebirth for the entire town.

Today, Porta Sant’Angelo is not just a stone relic: it is a symbolic door to the past, a living testament to the devotion, resilience, and pride of Manduria. Anyone who passes through its arch still feels the echo of a city that, between faith and art, knew how to reinvent itself without forgetting its roots."

Known as Porta Sant'Angelo, or Porta Napoli, because looking towards Taranto, the church dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo can be clearly seen. An imposing structure, like all the countless churches and palaces, built entirely of tuff stone. The master masons of Manduria specialize in the construction of the famous star-shaped or carriage vaults.
