What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Belvedere del Cassero for its significant historical insights and the absolutely stunning panoramic views it offers, stretching to the sea and Elba Island on clear days. The affordable entry fee is a major plus, making it a highly recommended stop for experiencing Massa Marittima's medieval heritage and natural beauty. Some may find the climb to the top a bit daunting due to heights.
"Been there in August 2025: I love it because it contains a lot of the city's history (establishment of the free municipality, conquest by Siena, etc..) and it's a remarkable example of engeneering skills back then with the bridge. From the top, you can enjoy a marvellous views of the countryside up to the sea and you realize how crucial the city was for controlling a vast area rich on mineral ore (including silver). The city of Massa Marittima impressed me a lot for its beauty and its ability to maintain its medieval structure (its greatest urban development was reached in the XIII century)."

"Nice torre if you're not scared of height. Only 4 EUR to enter. Really worth it. After you climb up you will be located before the nice arch that you can cross. Then there is a backyard with a great view of the region."

"Very impressive clock, bell and watch tower and a bridge!
The Torre del Candeliere or Candlemaker’s Tower was built for the Massetani in 1228 after they become a free state. I guess you could call it a sort of present to themselves, an outward symbol of their independence.
Unfortunately, the Sienese completely destroyed the tower when they took over in 1335. The building was rebuilt shorter than the original design and connected to the Sienese Fortress, which was added after Sienese occupation in an effort to control the rebellious townsfolk."
