What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ipogeo Materasum offers a fascinating journey into Matera's subterranean history, with visitors praising its unique underground chambers and historical significance. While the site itself is compelling, some reviewers noted issues with disinterested staff and the quality of the audio guide, suggesting that written explanations are a better alternative. The need for cash payment and a somewhat hidden entrance are practical points to consider.
"Very interesting experience to explore the underground and soak up some of Matera's history. Audio guide is annoying IMO, do yourself a favour and just read the sign boards, they are plentiful and cover most of what the monotonous audio guide covers, and more. The staff could not be more disinterested however, and the front entryway stinks of cigarettes (from the disinterested staff). Worth a look"

"If you are interested in history and unik saved history, this is definitely the place to visit. We happened to visit the caves on Good Friday and the weather was sunny so we got to be down there alone 🙂"

"Empty spaces with smell of pee, better to visit other museum with decorated space. Only cash"
