Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the unique historical significance and the spectacular panoramic views of Matera from the Monterrone complex. The ancient frescoes and the experience of exploring rock-hewn churches are frequently highlighted as unforgettable aspects of a visit. However, the challenging terrain and strict no-photography rule inside the crypt are noted drawbacks.

"The Monterrone complex, a spectacular tuff rock mass that rises in the Sasso Caveoso and dominates Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, is composed of two interconnected rock churches: the Crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone, the older one, thought to have been built between the 12th and 13th centuries, and the Rock Church of Santa Maria di Idris, built between the 14th and 15th centuries. The Crypt, however, having been abandoned for a long time and for a long time, was annexed to the adjacent church of Santa Maria di Idris in the early 19th century by a narrow internal connecting corridor; it houses an interesting cycle of 12th and 13th-century frescoes."

"The night view from here is the best! Go around sunset and see the night view too!"

"The crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone is completely dug into the rock unlike the adjacent communicating church of Santa Maria dell'Idris.
The original layout of the church seems to date back to a period between the 12th and 13th centuries.
The church features numerous precious frescoes from the year 1000 and in Greek-Byzantine style.
These frescoes are protected and it is therefore not possible to photograph the interior of the crypt.
The narrow passageway between the two churches dates back to the early 1800s and led to the destruction of several frescoes (today only a small part of which is visible on the wall). This explains the different authors of the paintings and the subjects chosen in the works.
Going out into the open air you find yourself on a terrace from which you have a fantastic view of the Sassi.

Access to this church is not exactly wheelchair accessible because the place is difficult to reach on foot (up and down the streets of Matera) and the entrance is also not well structured.
It is advisable to call first to check the visiting hours, because they vary according to the season:
- winter/autumn 10-16
- approximately from Easter to September 10-19
- in the month of August a particular timetable may be scheduled continuously from 10-22."
