"ME Region of the Ato Monument to the Fallen of the Masotto Battery The bronze monument is dedicated to the soldiers who, under the command of Captain Umberto Masotto (former student of the Military College đi Milan, today Teulié Military School), were killed in the battle of Adua on March 1, 1896. The two mountain batteries (3°C4°) sent to Eritrea on 16 December 1895, commanded respectively by Eduardo Bianchi. Umber to Masotto, they were called "Sicilian" because they formed mainly Sicilian soldiers. All the officers of the 4th Battalion (Masotto, Saja, Castelli, Schilardi) died valiantly on the Adua field and significant that 55 medals were awarded to the military value, 1 gold, 12 silver and 42 đi bronze Star, 2009). The task of erecting a monument to celebrate the fallen was entrusted to the sculptor Salvatore Buemi (Novara of Sicily 1867 . Bellosguardo 1916). The statuary group, fused in bronze and executed to a slightly smaller size than the real one, synthesizes with elficce realism the unfortunate outcome of the battle. The event, represented in its immediateness, in the dynamic image of the last soldier still standing who courageously defends the cannon with the bayonet. The scene reflects the stories of the survivors reported from the chronicles of time (Gazetta di Messina, March 24-25, 1896) and emotionally translates the desperate resistance of the heroic group obedient to the tragic order of General Matteo Albertoni: - The Sicilian Batteries remain in place, shoot until the last shot, Salvatore Buemi is one of the many sculptors supported by the Messianic municipality, perfecting his studies in Rome, where he adheres to the current of realism (L. L. Buemi). Paladino, 1997). In the capital the artist perhaps had a chance to see the monument đi Hercules Rosa (1846-1893) dedicated to the Cairoli brothers (1872). From the famous Roman work, arranged at the Pincio, the Buemi is one of more than one inspiration for the realization of the Masotto battery: the pyramidic setting of the characters, the typology of poses, real-estate details of clothing. 日 Statuary group, exhibited in plaster at the National Exhibition of Turin in 1898 and merged into the Royal Foundry of the same city, was placed on a high marble base with bronze plates at the sides showing 1 names of all the fallen. "It's a memorial dedicated to the fallen of the Battle of Adwa. It stands almost at the center of the "Promenade by the Sea," where you can relax, stroll, and let the children play. From here, you can also peacefully admire the cruise ships and other vessels leaving the port of Messina. A marvelous view!"

"The monument, the work of the Sicilian sculptor Salvatore Buemi, is located in Viale Libertà, along the seaside promenade and near the Bios Fountain. Built at the end of the 19th century, it commemorates the Sicilians who fell in the battle of Adua on 1 March 1896 against the Abyssinians, commissioned by the Sicilian Crispi in a vain attempt to conquer Ethiopia. On a marble base is placed the bronze sculpture consisting of three soldiers, one of whom is now dead; the second is wounded: he is leaning next to the cannon, but has the gun in his hand; the third is not wounded: with his left hand he supports the head of the wounded soldier, while in the other hand he holds the rifle and assumes a threatening attitude towards the enemy. On the sides of the monument are two bronze plaques with the names of the soldiers of the Masotto and Bianchini Battery, as well as some cannons with original pieces of the time."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Historical Context: Battle of Adwa

Batteria Masotto Capo Peloro stands as a solemn tribute to the soldiers who fought and fell in the Battle of Adwa on March 1, 1896. This battle was a pivotal moment in Ethiopian history, marking a decisive victory against Italian colonial forces. The two mountain batteries, the 3rd and 4th, were sent to Eritrea in December 1895, and were notably nicknamed "Sicilian" due to their predominantly Sicilian crews. The monument specifically honors Captain Umberto Masotto and his men, who were part of the 4th Battalion. All officers of this battalion perished heroically on the Adwa field, a testament to their sacrifice. The recognition of their valor was significant, with 55 medals for military value awarded, including one gold, twelve silver, and forty-two bronze stars. Reddit

The monument's creation was entrusted to the Sicilian sculptor Salvatore Buemi, who aimed to capture the tragic outcome of the battle with stark realism. The bronze sculpture vividly portrays the immediate aftermath, focusing on the last soldier standing, courageously defending the cannon with a bayonet. This scene is inspired by survivor accounts and chronicles of the time, emotionally translating the desperate resistance of the heroic group. Buemi's work is influenced by the realism prevalent in Roman art of the period, particularly in its pyramidal composition and the realistic details of the soldiers' attire. Reddit

The statuary group was first exhibited in plaster at the National Exhibition of Turin in 1898 before being cast in bronze. It was initially placed in the Garden at Mare Principe Umberto before being moved to its current prominent location on the Viale Libertà. The two 75mm bronze mountain guns flanking the monument were recovered in Addis Ababa after the Second African War (1935-36) and have since undergone restoration by specialized military units. Annually, a commemoration event is held, with the 24th Peloritani Artillery Regiment placing a laurel wreath at the monument's foot, often accompanied by the Aosta Brigade Band. Reddit

Artistic Merit and Inspiration

The monument to the fallen of the Masotto Battery is a significant work of art by sculptor Salvatore Buemi. Buemi, who studied in Rome and embraced the realism movement, drew inspiration from contemporary Roman monuments. It's believed he may have seen Hercules Rosa's monument to the Cairoli brothers (1872) at the Pincio, which likely influenced his compositional choices, such as the pyramidal arrangement of figures and the realistic depiction of poses and clothing. Reddit

Buemi's sculpture is celebrated for its elficce realism, effectively synthesizing the unfortunate outcome of the battle. The dynamic image of the last soldier standing, defending the cannon, is a powerful representation of desperate resistance. This artistic choice, combined with the historical context of the soldiers' obedience to a tragic order, imbues the monument with profound emotional weight. The bronze plaques on the marble base, listing the names of all the fallen, further personalize the memorial, transforming it from a general tribute into a specific remembrance of individual lives lost.
