Reviews Summary

Camposanto Monumentale is widely praised as a significant artistic and historical site, often described as an open-air museum with impressive sculptures and frescoes. Visitors appreciate its monumental architecture and the contemplative atmosphere. However, some reviewers note a lack of clear signage and guided tours, which can detract from the overall experience, and occasional issues with cleanliness.

"I heard this is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. It's open freely to the public. One can easily get a walk inside, just like in a park, and witness the architecture.
Many family come here especially on the holiday.
They sell flowers outside the cemetory."

Trang Phan Grace

"Based on opinions I expected much more. Worthy to visit if you have some time, but it’s really nothing special"

Paweł Berestecki

"Let's start with the positive things: the monumental cemetery of Messina is one of the most important monumental cemeteries in Europe and, together with the Staglieno cemetery in Genoa, the most artistic monumental cemetery in Italy. Inside there is much of Messina's neoclassical sculpture and architecture. The Art Nouveau, neo-Gothic and neoclassical architecture of the cemetery is enriched by the presence of lush vegetation and well-kept gardens that dot the burial sites. The cemetery is a city park and an outdoor art gallery. At the top of the cemetery there is a Gothic style church called "Cenobio". From the main gate of the cemetery you have a suggestive view of the square, surrounded by flowers, which make up a motif depicting the coat of arms of the city of Messina with the symbolic colors of the city - yellow and red on a white background. However, it must be added that the cemetery is not yet a tourist attraction, it lacks something to be defined as memorable: the directional signs are totally non-existent, there are no guided tours, nor with audio guides. There is not even, at least at the time of writing, a clear website containing historical information and a map. I was disappointed by the fact that one of the most illustrious, if not the most illustrious, guests of the cemetery, namely the great actor Adolfo Celi, does not have a shred of statue or sculpture that remembers and represents him. Finally, here and there I have unfortunately had to note the presence of dirt and rubbish, which outrages the memory of the deceased. To be improved."

The Artistry of Camposanto Monumentale

Camposanto Monumentale is celebrated as one of Europe's most artistic monumental cemeteries, a true testament to Italian heritage. TikTokReddit Its design, attributed possibly to Giovanni di Simone in 1277, was intended to create a scenic backdrop for the Piazza dei Miracoli and consolidate burials from around the cathedral. Instagram The site is a treasure trove of Neoclassical sculpture and architecture, housing the majority of Messina's artistic legacy in this style. Reddit Visitors can marvel at the intricate details of sarcophagi, many dating back to Roman times, and the impressive statuary that adorns the burial sites. Instagram

Beyond the sculptures, the frescoes within Camposanto Monumentale are a significant draw. The most famous are those by Buffalmacco, which, despite their age and some damage, offer a powerful glimpse into medieval art and storytelling. Instagram These works, often depicting scenes of life, death, and the afterlife, are a crucial part of the cemetery's artistic narrative. The interplay of light filtering through the Gothic cloisters onto these ancient artworks creates a uniquely atmospheric experience. Instagram

The cemetery is also described as a city park and an outdoor art gallery, enriched by lush vegetation and well-kept gardens. Reddit This blend of natural beauty and monumental art creates a contemplative space. Some visitors note that while the art is impressive, the site could benefit from better signage and guided tours to fully unlock its historical and artistic context. Reddit

A Place of Reflection and History

Camposanto Monumentale, meaning 'Holy Field,' was built on sacred ground, with tradition holding that soil brought back from the Holy Land by Archbishop Ubaldo Lanfranchi was mixed into its foundation. Instagram This historical and spiritual significance imbues the site with a unique aura. It served as the primary burial ground for Pisa's most illustrious citizens, making it a repository of the city's history and memory. Reddit

While it is a cemetery, many describe it as a place of life and dignity, rather than just an endpoint. Instagram The monumental architecture, including a Neo-Gothic church known as the 'Cenobio,' adds to its grandeur. Reddit The layout, with its cloisters and open spaces, invites visitors to wander and reflect, much like exploring a historical park. InstagramReddit Despite its artistic and historical importance, some reviews mention a lack of clear directional signs and the absence of readily available guided tours or audio guides, which can make fully appreciating its depth a challenge for some visitors.
