Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Forte San Salvatore for its breathtaking views of the Strait of Messina and the emotional experience of standing beneath the Madonnina della Lettera statue. The historical significance and imposing architecture are also highly appreciated. However, access can be challenging due to its military status, and the steep climb requires good physical condition and preparation.

"Amazing place..climb early in the morning though and make sure you have good footwear and plenty of water. Will take approx 45mins to 1hr and is steep in places...but its worth it"

Ian Lyons

"The decision to build the fortress was made in the 16th century to more effectively defend the port and the city (although the Bourbons later used it to bombard the city itself during its revolt); its strategic position made it an extremely powerful military instrument.
The Fort's structure consists of a series of walls converging toward the central, semi-cylindrical bastion. The bastions housed artillery batteries facing the Strait and the harbor entrance.
Currently, the structure is entered through a 17th-century gate—surmounted by an inscription in Spanish referring to the work carried out in 1614—set between two buttresses that abut the old front, which features more recent crenellations for riflemen.
A very interesting visit that I highly recommend."

"Visited thanks to the "La Via dei Tesori" festival, as you can see from the photos, there are rooms set aside for exhibitions. Open every weekend in September, I recommend visiting now since, being a military base, it would be closed at other times."

The Strategic Importance of Forte San Salvatore

Forte San Salvatore, designed by architect Antonio Ferramolino, was a crucial 16th-century fortification built to defend the port of Messina. Its strategic location at the mouth of the harbor made it a formidable military instrument, housing artillery batteries that commanded the Strait. The fortress's design features a series of converging walls and semi-cylindrical bastions, a testament to Renaissance military architecture. Reddit+1

Throughout its history, the fort played a significant role in various conflicts and political shifts. It was enlarged in the 17th century and saw action during the anti-Spanish revolt of 1674. Later, it surrendered during periods of Bourbon rule and Italian unification. The imposing structure, with its high sheer walls and wedge-shaped bastions, was designed for maximum defensive capability, even incorporating sentry boxes projecting from the cliffs. Reddit

Interestingly, the construction of the fort necessitated the demolition of an early Basilian convent dedicated to the SS. Salvatore, founded around 1090. This historical layering adds another dimension to understanding the site's evolution from a religious center to a vital military stronghold. Reddit
