It was originally built thanks to a donation by Rozzone, a medieval official in charge of minting coins. Around 1100, following the First Crusade and the recapture of Jerusalem, the crypt was rededicated as Santo Sepolcro (Holy Sepulchre) in honor of the Holy City. Architecturally, the space features early medieval Romanesque elements—stone columns, vaulted arches, and preserved sections of the ancient Roman marble pavement and drainage channels. Recent restorations have revealed beautiful star-patterned ceiling frescoes, symbolic decorations referencing Jerusalem, and earlier archaeological layers dating back to the 4th century."
