The Church of Purgatory was founded in 1643 by order of Bishop Vespasiano Vulpicella and is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, Consolation of the Afflicted.
Built from local stone until 1655 and consecrated on December 6, 1667, it features a magnificent late-Renaissance façade, featuring a single entrance portal flanked by four statues of Saints Peter, Stephen, Paul, and Lawrence placed in niches. Inside the church are paintings by Bernardo Cavallino (17th century) and Corrado Giaquinto, as well as the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows (which is carried in procession on Passion Friday) and six papier-mâché statues, all works by local sculptor Giulio Cozzoli, culminating in the poignant Pietà group, which are carried in procession on Holy Saturday."
