What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Pozzo Sella Monteponi for its fascinating history and the incredible restoration efforts by dedicated volunteers. The site offers a compelling look into Sardinia's industrial past, with impressive machinery and architectural elements. While some may find the tours very detailed, the passion of the guides makes it a highly recommended and educational experience.
"We were treated to a tour of the premises by the son of a former president of the association, and it was very interesting to learn the history of the mining operations in Iglesias. I highly recommend stopping by."
Paal B. Solhaug
"Built between 1872 and 1874, it was intended to create a large-scale infrastructure to address the problem of groundwater drainage in the Iglesiente metal-bearing basin, which was impeding the development of deep-seated excavation and mineral extraction. The external structures of the Sella Shaft, of particular architectural value, which had housed the drainage pumps and steam engines with their boilers, were permanently repurposed to house the mine's technological services (mechanical workshop, forge, and carpentry)."
Alberto Lilliu
"Through a project in collaboration with schools, the municipality, and the Pozzo Sella Association, it was possible to reclaim this part of the mining site, which housed the old water suction pumps and was later converted into a workshop for repairing mechanical parts. Unique artifacts testify to a recent mining past. A fascinating place, definitely worth a visit."
