"Villa Mirabellino was built by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini in 1776, who commissioned its construction to architect Giulio Galliori. The cardinal already owned Villa Mirabello, and Villa Mirabellino was its annex. The two villas face each other and were connected by a tree-lined avenue.
In 1805, the two villas were expropriated by the French government and became part of the nascent Villa Reale Park.
Villa Mirabellino was renamed "Villa Amalia" in honor of Viceroy Augusta Amalia of Bavaria, who fell in love with the villa and made it her favorite residence.
In 1920, it was ceded to the State Property Office. The building was designated for the National Organization for War Orphans and later became the headquarters of the Princess Maria di Savoia Institute.
In 1942, it was granted free of charge to the municipalities of Monza and Milan.
A few years later, the Milanese administration established a heliotherapy colony there, which proved so invasive that it almost completely obliterated its original internal space.
In 1996, a proposal was made to house the Botany section of the Civic Museum of Natural History of the Municipality of Milan, but the project ultimately fell through.
Recently, the Municipality of Monza has expressed interest in acquiring it to save it from the degradation that has been taking its toll for too long."
