Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Grotta di Seiano and its connected archaeological park, calling it a hidden gem in Naples. The ancient Roman tunnel is an engineering marvel, leading to the stunning ruins of the Villa Pausilypon with breathtaking views. While tours are primarily in Italian, guides are often helpful and enthusiastic, making the experience informative and memorable. Some note that it's not heavily advertised, contributing to its less crowded feel compared to major sites.

"A beautiful site not to be missed if you are in Naples. Pausilypon literally means “ending pain”. You would understand why after walking through the tunnel, which was first built by the Romans and then reinforced by the Bourbons.
The guided tour is in Italian only but the guide Giovanni was very helpful and asked me to stay close to him so that he can explain the history to me also in English.
There is a small parking at a view point which is around 20 meters down the entrance of the cave. Many people just stop at the view point to take a photo and then they move on. You can probably get a parking place simply by waiting for a few minutes. Otherwise, the guide at the cave can tell you where to park a bit further down the hill. The last option is to park like a Napolitano with a bit of creativity. 🤪"

"Not to be missed. A gem in Napoli, and the guided tour is very informative. Just make sure to book online and once you are there you will walk through an amazing tunnel to reach a beautiful scenery."

Lara Hussein

"An awe-inspiring place where architecture is blended with nature.
Though not very well advertised (hence the four stars) as the big vesuvian cities of Pompei and Herculaneum, this site is just as worth to visit as the above mentioned... Not to mention the view!
The local guide Giovanni was very helpful and enthusiastic about the site and showed passion every step of the way!"

The Engineering Marvel: Grotta di Seiano

The Grotta di Seiano is more than just a tunnel; it's a testament to Roman ingenuity. Carved through the volcanic tuff rock of Posillipo Hill, this 780-meter-long passage was constructed in the 1st century AD, likely under Emperor Augustus. Its primary purpose was to connect the coastal villas and settlements, facilitating movement and trade in the region. The tunnel's construction involved sophisticated techniques for the time, showcasing the Romans' advanced understanding of engineering and their ability to shape the landscape to their needs. TikTok+1

Over the centuries, the tunnel has seen further development. It was reinforced by the Bourbons, indicating its continued strategic importance. Walking through it today offers a tangible connection to ancient history, allowing visitors to experience the same path that Romans and later inhabitants of Naples traversed. The sheer scale and the effort involved in its creation are awe-inspiring, making it a highlight for history buffs and curious travelers alike. TikTokReddit

Pro Tip: While the tunnel itself is impressive, remember that it serves as a gateway to the equally fascinating Parco Archeologico del Pausilypon. The experience is best enjoyed as a complete journey from the ancient passage to the ruins beyond. TikTok

Exploring the Parco Archeologico del Pausilypon

Emerging from the Grotta di Seiano, you step into the Parco Archeologico del Pausilypon, a sprawling ancient complex offering a glimpse into Roman life and leisure. The park is home to the remains of a grand Roman villa, believed to have belonged to Publius Vedius Pollio. This was not just a residence but a place of entertainment and spectacle. TikTok

The most striking features of the park are its entertainment venues. You can explore the ruins of an odeon, a smaller theater likely used for private performances and recitals, and a larger amphitheater that could accommodate up to 2,000 spectators. Imagine the performances, gladiatorial contests, or public gatherings that once took place here, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Bay of Naples. The blend of historical architecture with natural beauty is truly remarkable. TikTok+1

Beyond the structures, the park offers incredible panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples, including the islands of Nisida and Capri. The Belvedere Bixio viewpoint, located near the tunnel's entrance, provides an excellent vantage point to soak in the scenery. This combination of history, architecture, and breathtaking natural beauty makes the Pausilypon park a must-visit destination. TikTokReddit
