"The Canonica of Novara Cathedral represents an unmissable stop on a journey through history from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Located in the heart of the city, the Canonica offers a precious testimony to Novara's ecclesiastical and architectural history, dating back to its origins in the first half of the 12th century.
The initial construction, commissioned by Bishop Litifredo, included a "claustrum" intended to accommodate the clergy of the local Church. This space was organized around a courtyard, surrounded by houses on three sides and the Bishop's Palace on the western side. The Canonica has undergone numerous expansions and modifications over the centuries, including the introduction of a portico and the construction of a small loggia adjacent to the Bishop's Palace. Between 1476 and 1486, this loggia was closed to create a room for the chapter library.
Analyzing the structure of the Canonica, it is clear that the northern wing is the oldest part, characterized by masonry made of reused bricks in a herringbone pattern. This architectural complexity reflects the various historical phases that have overlapped over time. The unevenness of the vaults is balanced by pointed arches, which lend a sense of uniformity to the complex.
Along the portico, numerous pictorial testimonies from periods prior to the restoration can be admired, along with terracotta tiles that framed the original windows. The walls of the Canonica's quadriportico also house numerous ancient works of art, forming what is known as the Lapidary Museum, established by Canon Carlo Francesco Frasconi in 1813. This museum collects Roman epigraphs, tombstones, and monuments. To ensure the preservation of these artifacts, many of them have been transferred to the Canonica del Duomo Museums, located in adjacent buildings, and replaced with faithful reproductions.
The Canonica del Duomo Museums are open to the public on weekends and by reservation during the week. These museums offer a fascinating experience, allowing visitors to explore not only the ecclesiastical history but also the architectural and artistic evolution of Novara.
Today, the Canonica del Duomo is part of a larger complex that includes the Cathedral itself, the Baptistery, and the Bishop's Palace. This complex represents a priceless cultural heritage, testifying to centuries of history, art, and faith. Visiting the Canonica del Duomo di Novara means taking a journey through time, discovering the city's deep roots and appreciating the beauty and richness of its historical heritage.
I highly recommend anyone visiting Novara not to miss the opportunity to visit the Canonica del Duomo. Its fascinating history and works of art make it an essential destination for culture and history lovers."
