A Must-See in Alghero!
Nuraghe Palmavera is an incredible archaeological site and definitely a must-see if you're visiting Alghero. The site is easy to access, with clear signage from the main road, and there's ample parking just a short walk away, which made the visit really convenient.
The entrance fee is very reasonable, especially considering the historical significance of the site. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to share insights about the Nuragic civilisation, which really enhanced the experience.
Overall, a fascinating place with great service and easy logistics—don’t miss it if you’re in the area!"

"Amazing site! The nuraghe Palmavera is a complex nuraghe made of a main tower, the most ancient (A), and a more recent building, the bastion, that was shaped with a secondary tower (B) in the most recent phase, a courtyard, a corridor with niches and a surrounding wall that encloses the
most ancient tower.
The last archeological researches done in the nuraghe have unearthed a third tower (C), collapsed or dismantled in ancient times, due to a probable structural failure.
The upper floor of the nuraghe could have been reached by stone staircases in the main tower, on both sides of the courtyard and in the corridor, close to the East entrance of the nuraghe."

The Nuragic Civilization

Nuraghe Palmavera offers a profound glimpse into the Nuragic civilization, a Bronze Age culture that flourished in Sardinia from around 1800 BCE to the Roman conquest. These enigmatic people are renowned for their distinctive stone structures, the nuraghi, which served as defensive fortresses, residences, and possibly religious sites. Nuraghe Palmavera itself is a complex example, featuring a central tower and a surrounding village, indicating a significant settlement. The construction methods, using massive, precisely cut stones without mortar, showcase remarkable engineering skills that have endured for millennia. Instagram+1

The civilization's influence extended across the Mediterranean, with evidence of trade and cultural exchange with Mycenaean Greece, Egypt, and the Levant. Understanding the Nuragic people involves piecing together archaeological findings, as their written language, if any, remains largely undeciphered. Sites like Palmavera are crucial for unraveling their societal structure, daily life, and technological advancements. Instagram+1

Exploring the Architecture of Nuraghe Palmavera

The architecture of Nuraghe Palmavera is a prime example of Nuragic engineering. The central nuraghe tower is a complex structure, initially built as a single tower (Tower A) and later expanded with a bastion and a second tower (Tower B) during subsequent phases of construction. This evolution suggests a growing community and increasing defensive needs. The use of cyclopean masonry, large, irregular stones fitted together without mortar, is a hallmark of Nuragic construction and has allowed these structures to withstand the test of time. Instagram+1

Within the main tower, you can explore its internal chambers and imagine how they were accessed, likely via stone staircases. The surrounding village ruins provide context for daily life, with the remains of circular huts and pathways. The site's layout, often on elevated positions with strategic views, highlights the importance of defense and resource management for the Nuragic people. Instagram
