Reviews Summary

Otranto is widely praised as a beautiful and historic seaside town with stunning Adriatic waters and a charming old town. Visitors love the picturesque port, the well-preserved castle, and the intricate mosaic floor in the cathedral. While generally a positive experience, some find the town center can get crowded and noisy during peak season, and mooring fees at the port can be high.

"A good place for a walk outside the old town, the noise and the crowds."

"Otranto

The coastal towns on the Adriatic in striking distance of Lecce are famed for their beauty, history and beaches and Otranto is right up there at the top of the list. The drive there is easier thanks to modern road connecting this coastal resort to the main north/south dual carriage way joing Bari in the north passing Brindisi and Lecce ultimately to san leuca at the most southerly point of Puglia and arguably Italy where two seas collide, the Adriatic and Ionian.

You might wonder what all the fuss is about on your approach to town centre but whether driving or walking as you drop to sea level you are not disappointed.

To the north the crescent bay rises to wonderful vantage points above the safe, sheltered sandy beach laid out in front of bars, cafes and restaurants. Fishing boats and the marina fill the southern side of the bay, nestled below what is a fairly extensive and interesting old town crammed full with the castle, of course, cathedral, of course, ramparts and winding narrow streets full of shops and cafes, in buildings from a long gone past.

It’s a wonderful, bustling seaside resort, meriting it’s reputation as a must see location. The town centre beach is lovely and in summer it is one of several in Puglia that is truly accessible to all. There are wheelchair accessible paths on the beach and lifeguards are on hand to assist wheelchair users and individuals with other mobility or sensory issues to enjoy the beach and indeed the water, literally taking individuals out of their wheelchairs and in to the sea using specialist floatation devices.

Within striking distance of Otranto you can easily reach well known towns, beaches with famous rock formations and rugged coastlines, Andria, the two sisters and the poesa hole in the rocks giving access to the water and other caves to explore.

Should you visit Otranto? Of course you should if time allows, you will not be disappointed ✅
