"Beautifully decorated church, I think it is Baroque style. Well worth a visit, it is close to the city centre."

"Church of San Filippo Neri. The Church of the Immaculate Conception and of San Filippo Neri owes its architectural setting and its iconographic layout to the Roman church of Santa Maria in Vallicella , where it was San Filippo Neri himself who wanted all the altars of the side chapels to be dedicated to the Virgin . It is one of the most interesting examples not only in Perugia , but in Italy , of the application of the Tridentine dictates in the iconographic program, which prescribed to illustrate the mysteries of faith with the facts of the Old Testament and with symbols, so that the illiterate had before their eyes everything they could not learn from printed books. The first stone of the church was laid on the day of the Immaculate Conception . Father Orazio Mancini therefore wanted to dedicate all the altars of the new church to the Mysteries of Mary 's life and compose with the stories and symbols painted in each chapel a story that would tell the faithful about the virtues of the Virgin . The pictorial and plastic decoration is full of figures, symbols and allegories intended to celebrate the greatness of the Mother of God . The general concept is the Triumph of the Immaculate Conception , which appears clear if we consider the unity of concept and the order with which the symbols and figures follow one another."

The Tridentine Influence on Art

The Chiesa di San Filippo Neri is a fascinating case study in the application of the Tridentine dictates following the Council of Trent. These decrees aimed to reinforce Catholic doctrine and engage the faithful through art. In this church, this translates to an iconographic program meticulously designed to illustrate the mysteries of faith, particularly the life and virtues of the Virgin Mary. The goal was to make these narratives accessible even to the illiterate, using symbols and stories from both the Old and New Testaments. Reddit

This approach is evident in the dedication of each side altar to a specific mystery of Mary's life. The unity of concept throughout the church emphasizes the Triumph of the Immaculate Conception. Visitors can trace this narrative through the diverse pictures of saints and allegorical figures adorning the chapels, creating a rich visual sermon. Reddit
