What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the fascinating historical depth of Perugia, particularly the unique underground exploration offered by the Sotterranea tour. The city's ancient layers, from Etruscan to Roman and medieval, are a major draw. However, some find the English tour availability limited and the VR experience could be enhanced.
"Bought this as a trio of tickets to Cathedral & sacristy (very good audio tour), Museo Capitole and Sotterranea. Full price for all 3 €21. If you have limited time and have to choose, buy the ticket to Sotterranea only. I did the tour (in Italian, check re English) with wonderful, warm, and knowledgeable Beatrice. Out of all the staff on reception at Isola San Lorenzo, she is the nicest and the friendliest one. Her other colleague could take lessons, they really didn't look delighted to be there, and i saw and heard in the courtyard the next group, let's just say I was glad Beatrice was our guide. If you are doing a tour, do ask when Beatrice is leading. The subterranean complex is really quite amazing, Roman road, remnants of Domus, Etruscan walls and temple foundations, layers after layer of Augusta Perusia later Perugia, on display, beautifully lit up. Even the VR experience was excellent. I just wish we had an extra 10min to look at some of the finds displayed in there. To me that part (post VR) felt a little rushed. Heartily recommend."

"Great tour, excellent explanation. At the end of the tour you are given 3D virtual reality goggles and you can see the same walk all over again… in the reconstruction of 2100 years earlier! Highly recommended!"

The Layers of History: Beneath Perugia
Travelers often describe the experience as 'fascinating' and 'amazing,' highlighting the ability to see the 'different layers in time.' The VR experience at the end of the tour, while sometimes critiqued for its graphics or brevity, aims to further immerse visitors in the ancient city. It's a stark contrast to the bustling city above and a powerful reminder of the civilizations that have called this hilltop home for millennia.
Navigating Perugia's Vertical Landscape
These escalators are not just functional; they are an integral part of the Perugia experience, often depositing visitors directly into the heart of the ancient city, sometimes even emerging from unexpected historical structures like old fortresses. While the climb is part of the charm for some, these modern marvels ensure that the city's historical treasures are accessible to a wider range of visitors, making it easier to explore the City Walls and the attractions they enclose.
The Etruscan Legacy
Beyond the arch, the Sotterranea tour reveals further Etruscan remnants, including temple foundations and sections of their original walls. These discoveries underscore Perugia's significance as a major Etruscan center. For history enthusiasts, exploring these ancient layers provides a profound connection to a civilization that predates Rome and shaped much of central Italy.
