What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Cala Galera Marina is a well-protected and scenic harbor with clean facilities and a good shipyard. Visitors appreciate the charming atmosphere of Porto Ercole and the quality of the marina's seafood restaurant. However, some travelers have reported issues with unexpected fees and perceived dishonest management practices, particularly towards foreigners.
"UPDATE: I ultimately was able to sit down with the director of the marina who agreed that our treatment had been "strange." Ultimately we only paid 75 euro to move our boat and the extra night of berthing was waived. A fair solution in my opinion. I've added two stars to my review. My original review is below.
Expensive and dishonest marina. Not a good place to transit through. Management of public/tourist marina won't hesitate to take advantage of you with unannounced fees and policies that are clearly only applied to foreigners.
While staying we were promised assistance to move our boat to a private berth in the marina where it was to undergo repairs. This offer was extended by the marina and the owner of the berth with no mention of payment required. And I would say is a typical service on extremely windy days. Just ten minutes before requesting assistance over VHF I even stopped in the office, where I was told I just needed to call the tower on VHF and they would assist. Well when zodiac showed up I was told I must pay 100 euro before moving the boat. Annoyed, I went to the office again where I was then told they didn't have enough staff to move the boat that day, and that I must pay for another night in the berth (91 euro) plus the 100 euro fee. Suddenly in ten minutes it went from paying nothing to 191 euro. It was very obvious they don't normally charge all these fees to the locals and knowing our timeline they figured they could get away with it. I've stayed in dozens of other marinas around Italy and the Med and have never been treated like this.
We have decided to move our boat as soon as repairs are completed rather than keep it at Cala Galera and risk additional unexpected fees. There are much cheaper and more convenient marinas just south such as Traiano.
We also witnessed their clubhouse set on fire which raises questions about the safety of boats kept here. Although I do think the marina is fairly secure due to how remote it is.
Long term berths are managed separately and impossible to arrange unless on site since none of the contacts on their site are up to date and accurate.
Showers and toilets were clean and hot water worked.
There is a large hoist and well equipped ship yard. Multiple chandlers that have decent selections.
There is at least one excellent seafood restaurant in the marina which is pictured. Go upstairs for the fancy dining experience, and down stairs for a more bar like atmosphere. We had two excellent meals cooked by the friendly and welcoming chef. Dinner is at 8. There is a handwritten menu but just let the chef cook his recommendation.
Not a good location to provision. Marina market is friendly but limited selection and overpriced. Geared towards local day trippers."

Understanding Marina Operations and Fees
While the marina itself is described as well-maintained and secure due to its remote location, the management of public/tourist services has been a point of contention for some visitors. It's recommended to approach interactions with management proactively, seeking clear communication regarding all costs and services to ensure a smooth experience. Exploring alternative marinas like Marina di Traiano to the south might be a consideration if budget or straightforward fee structures are a priority.
Despite these concerns, the marina does offer clean facilities like showers and toilets with hot water. The presence of multiple chandlers also suggests a good selection of marine supplies. The overall impression is a functional and secure marina, but one where visitors should exercise diligence regarding financial transactions.
