"Fantastic place I deeply reccommend to visit it. Archeological Roman site where Pozzuoli found its origins. Rione Terra offers guided tours for only 5 euro with local guide. It is not possible to make the tour alone. Trust or not, going alone would not be the same as going with someone that explain you the history behind this place. It is a real trip through the past, walking in the underground. I really appreciated it, I reccommended everyone to come here. I also recommend to book in advance."

"Definitely worth a visit, and to be combined with the anphytheatre and the roman market. Only annoying thing is the schedule (opens only on weekends and holidays) and make sure to reserve your guided tour, or you won't be able to visit."
Massimo Strino
"Superb, huge, rich, impressive not only for the majestic Roman remains, dug inside a hill due to successive bradisysmic movements, but also for the elegant engineering work of restoration."

The History of Rione Terra
Over time, successive bradyseismic movements – the gradual rising and falling of the Earth's crust – significantly impacted the area. These geological shifts led to the submersion and eventual abandonment of parts of the ancient city. The evacuation in 1970 due to severe bradyseism marked a turning point, leading to extensive archaeological investigations and restoration efforts.
Today, Rione Terra offers a fascinating glimpse into this layered history. The underground excavations have revealed a well-preserved Roman city, showcasing its streets, buildings, and infrastructure. The ongoing restoration work highlights the ingenuity of modern engineering in preserving and presenting this invaluable historical treasure.
Understanding Bradysism and its Impact
The most significant bradyseismic event affecting Rione Terra occurred in 1970, leading to the evacuation of the entire district due to severe ground uplift. This event, while disruptive, also preserved the underground city by protecting it from further weathering and human interference. The dramatic shifts are a constant reminder of the powerful geological forces at play beneath the surface.
Visitors can witness the tangible effects of bradyseism within the underground site. The layered stratigraphy and the condition of the ancient ruins tell a story of adaptation and resilience. The careful restoration work has made these geological impacts visible, allowing us to understand how the city evolved and was eventually preserved beneath the earth.
The Value of Guided Tours
Guides at Rione Terra are often local experts, deeply familiar with the area's past and the scientific explanations behind its formation. They bring the ancient city to life with engaging narratives, pointing out details that might otherwise be missed. Their insights into the daily lives of Roman inhabitants, the impact of bradyseism, and the restoration process are invaluable.
Many visitors rave about the quality of the guides, describing them as professional, well-prepared, and passionate. The relatively low cost of these tours makes them an exceptional value, transforming a simple visit into an educational and memorable journey through time.
