What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Gole di San Venanzio's breathtaking natural beauty, particularly the stunning hermitage carved into the gorge and the refreshing, albeit icy, river waters perfect for summer dips. While the trails are generally accessible, some find the navigation to the trailhead a bit challenging.
"Truly beautiful gorges, similar in shape to the Sagittario Gorges. I took the trail that starts from the village of Raiano (park near the "Lo Chalet" bar/restaurant). It's easy and well-marked, starting near a wooden crucifix sculpture and descending toward the hermitage of San Venanzio (it briefly crosses the paved road).
From the hermitage, you can choose to continue toward "La Solfa," a spring of icy sulfurous water. The trail is also well-marked. It's about 5 km in total, round trip (reverse the same route). This route is among the easiest in the entire reserve and has an elevation gain of about 180 m. Near the hermitage, for those who want to avoid walking half the route, there's a limited parking area and an open kiosk selling sandwiches and snacks (the road to this parking lot is paved and in good condition, but a bit narrow).
Below the hermitage, as if continuing the trail toward La Solfa, there are several interesting spots where you can cool off in the river and enjoy a pleasant picnic lunch. A visit recommended to everyone!"

"The gorges with their truly beautiful hermitage. Given the limited parking and narrow road, I recommend parking immediately after the hermitage sign on the main road in a large parking lot. From there, a fairly easy trail through nature leads to a mill with direct access to the gorges. Following the trail, you reach the base of the hermitage, where you can descend into the gorge and bathe in the cold, clear waters. Once you reach the hermitage, there's a church worth visiting. From there, stone steps (slippery in some places) lead to the lower levels, which overlook the gorges. The Scala Santa (Holy Stairs) is a distinctive feature, a tunnel carved into the rock with stone steps that emerge practically inside the church, in front of the altar. Near the church, there's a small kiosk with tables and benches. In short, it's a perfect place to find refreshment, meditate, and spend a day in touch with nature."

"The view is truly breathtaking. Unfortunately, the route to the trailhead isn't well marked, and it was a real challenge to find. However, if you manage to find it, a few minutes' walk along a path that's perfectly manageable for anyone, consisting mostly of dirt steps, will take you to the old mill, the Hermitage of San Venanzio, and the river that flows beneath it, offering not only the beauty of the landscape but also the coolness of the water during the summer heat. I recommend hiking shoes and a swimsuit. The water is freezing but pleasant during the summer heat. There's also a kiosk near the hermitage. I recommend setting your GPS to the Hermitage of San Venanzio and not the Gorges, otherwise you'll be taken to the middle of nowhere."
