What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Mausoleum of Theodoric architecturally impressive, particularly its unique monolithic dome and its historical significance as an Ostrogothic monument. However, many note that the interior is very bare and underwhelming, leading some to suggest enjoying the exterior from the surrounding park is sufficient.
"Mausoleum itself is very impressive and contrasts nicely with other main sites in Ravenna. surrounded by a nice park it creates a fitting atmosphere for a tomb of a great king. Inside is extremely underwhelming, very bare bones. No decorations, just bare walls and and empty and damaged sarchophagus. So buying a ticket to visit is not worth it. You can the see entire thing from the park, beyond the fence.
Site is within walking distance from the city center (but there is also parking, if you wneed it) and best way to visit is after a day of admiring mosaics at other sites. Park allows you to relax and the muted exterior is a stark contrast to vibrant mosaics elsewhere. and being open all the time gives you an opportunity to visit it after other sites close."

"The Mausoleo di Teodorico in Ravenna, built around 520 AD by Theodoric the Great, is a distinctive Ostrogothic monument made entirely of Istrian stone. Its most striking feature is a massive monolithic dome, weighing about 230 tons, set atop a two-level decagonal structure. Originally intended as Theodoric’s tomb, his remains were later removed during the Byzantine period. The mausoleum reflects a blend of Roman architectural tradition and Gothic innovation and is part of Ravenna’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites."

"Very impressive, one solid stone forming the roof, built when the „Dark Ages“ were about to start some 1500 years ago. Both levels are accessible at just 4 Euro."
