What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Cattedrale di San Flaviano to be a spacious and historically significant church in Recanati, particularly appreciating its free admission and the striking contrast of the main nave's colorful ceiling against white walls. Some note the interior can be quite dark, and it's advisable to check opening hours as it may be closed at times.
"In the extreme northwestern part of the old town in Recanati. A spacious church 'hidden' among the neighboring buildings. Beautiful ceiling in the main nave."
Paweł Piotr Sucholeski
"San Flaviano is Recanati's cathedral and co-cathedral. It enjoys the same dignity and privileges as a cathedral, but lesser precedence.
PLAN - Three naves. The presbytery includes the "papal" high altar and the wooden choir. Along the right aisle, starting from the presbytery, are the altars of San Carlo Borromeo, San Filippo Neri, Madonna and Saints, and San Liborio.
Along the left aisle, starting from the back of the church, is the baptistery; below are the chapels of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Blessed Sacrament, complete with a wooden choir. To the left of the presbytery is the chapel containing the three urns of Bishops Angelo di Bevagna and Nicolò Dalle Aste, and of Pope Gregory XII.
Adjacent is the Chapel of the Relics, including those of the Holy Cross and the reliquary containing the arm bone of Saint Flavian, donated by Pope Gregory XII.
THE CRYPT preserves the remains of the first cathedral: traces of frescoes of the Virgin of Sorrows at the foot of the Cross and of Saint Sebastian; stone capitals at the base of the terracotta columns. The two burial urns contain the remains of Cardinal Tommaso Antici, who died in 1812, and Bishop Luigi Cossio, who passed away on January 3, 1957."
