What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Castello Aragonese for its breathtaking panoramic views and historical significance. The affordable entry fee is also a major plus. Some reviewers noted that while the views are spectacular, the interior of the castle might offer limited detailed historical exhibits, but the overall experience is highly recommended.
"Such a beautiful place to visit. It's only small and you can easily get around in 30 minutes. Entry is 5 Euro and in cash only. A guide will explain the layout and where to go. It's a gorgeous structure to visit and a must visit when in Reggio. It's a shame that more couldn't be preserved after the earthquake and Tsunami of 1908."

"So much more could be done with the surrounding grounds. There does seem to be some attempt to improve it so fingers crossed the renovation work will be completed. Reggio is a lovely city and deserves a great castle 😊"
Pete&Wendy Girtley
"Admission costs €5. There are no furnished rooms to visit, but there may be temporary exhibitions inside. From the upper terrace, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the Strait of Messina and Mount Etna. The visit, including the external tour of the walls, lasts about an hour.
The castle is believed to have been initially built around the 6th century AD, but reliable information about it begins around the 11th century AD. Over the centuries, it was conquered and modified by the Ostrogoths, Lombards, Byzantines, Normans, Angevins and Aragonese, the latter of whom gave it its current name. Other kingdoms succeeded one another in the following centuries.
Despite the fact that the massive original towers had withstood the earthquake of 1908 well, some proposed its demolition. However, only partial demolition was carried out, and restoration and reconstruction work began only forty years ago."
