What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Torre degli Appiani for its historical significance, stunning sunset views, and the cultural exhibitions it hosts. The adjacent port area is noted as a pleasant spot for walks and dining, though parking can be a challenge, and music at nearby venues can be quite loud.
"Nice area for a walk with many nearby places for food and drinks. Finding a parking apot could be difficult."
Paulus Palantikus
"Nice place for a walk and drink or dinner in nearby restaurants."
Karol Lewanski
"A beautiful corner of historic buildings, perhaps the wildest and most significant of Elba's history, it majestically dominates the port of Rio Marina at the edge of the authentic village. Inside, it houses a small museum of Etruscan-Roman civilization, with various amphorae and historical photographs framed by old fishing nets.
In the summer, it hosts painting exhibitions by
new artists, including Simona Inglese of Rio Marina. With her canvases of "sails"—in some cases literally the material of real sails—against beautiful chromatic backgrounds of sea and sky, she pushes us toward the horizon, reflecting on sea travel, the journey of life, the inner navigation that is a metaphor for the search for one's true place—each one's Ithaca—a destination beyond which there is nothing, the remote corner of the heart that, however, requires the right wind to reach it, that is, the inspiration of the lofty thought necessary to rediscover ourselves, a thought that originates from the journey itself, from the places and people encountered. The poet Cavafy comes to mind:
"Ithaka
If you set out for Ithaca,
pray that your journey will be long,
and full of adventures and knowledge.
Do not fear the Laestrygonians and the Cyclopes
or angry Poseidon: never
will you find such monsters on your way,
if your thought remains lofty and the exquisite
emotion that touches our heart
and body. Neither Laestrygonians nor Cyclopes
nor harsh Poseidon will you encounter,
unless you carry them within,
unless your heart sets them before you.
Pray that your journey will be long.
And may the summer mornings be many
that see you enter (and with what joy
) ports previously unknown.
Stop at the Phoenician markets
to purchase beautiful merchandise,
madrepores and corals, ebony and amber,
voluptuous perfumes of every kind,
as many as you can. voluptuous aromas.
Travel to many cities of Egypt,
to learn from the wise.
Always keep Ithaca in mind.
Your fate marks you for that landing.
But do not rush your journey.
Better that it lasts many years, than that as an old man you finally land on the islet,
rich with all you earned on the journey,
without waiting for it to give you riches.
Ithaca has given you the beautiful journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing more to give you.
And if you find her poor, Ithaca has not deceived you.
Returning so wise, so experienced,
you will have understood what an Ithaca means.
Thank you, Rio, with your Tower that you care for well, thank you, sky, sea that you inspire!"
