What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mefite d'Ansanto is a unique geological wonder with deep historical and mythological roots, offering an evocative experience. Visitors praise its fascinating 'breathing earth' phenomenon and ancient significance, but lament the lack of signage and underdeveloped infrastructure. Safety warnings regarding dangerous gas emissions are paramount.
"The Mefite of Frigento, an under-explored natural treasure.
During the drive from Frigento to the Mefite, what immediately strikes (and negatively) is the complete lack of signs or directions to this extraordinary place. There are no signs along the road, no information points; we were only able to find our destination thanks to Google Maps. It's truly a shame that such a unique site is not adequately promoted and enhanced by the local administration. Once we arrived, we noticed that some work had recently been done on a nature trail, but unfortunately the route is short and not fully developed. Nonetheless, the atmosphere is evocative, and one senses the historical and spiritual significance of the place, which has been an object of worship and veneration for centuries.
An important warning: some signs warn of the risk on days when the smell of sulfur is more intense. In such conditions, it's best not to get too close, as the gases emitted can be dangerous. We still managed to descend to the point where we can witness the natural phenomenon of the earth "breathing," continuously emitting vapors from underground. A fascinating and rare spectacle, truly astonishing.
Continuing along the trail, a marvelous natural valley opens up, still poorly maintained but with enormous potential for sustainable tourism. It would be perfect for hiking trails, guided tours, and educational activities related to nature and geology.
In short, the Mefite di Frigento represent a corner of Irpinia where nature expresses itself with strength and mystery, a precious heritage that deserves greater protection, promotion, and accessibility."

"The Ansanto Valley, on the outskirts of Rocca San Felice, is a legendary place, captivating the imagination with its mythological elements. The Mephite, which patronizes the area, is linked to the deity who ensured the fertility of the land and the fecundity of women. A goddess worshipped by pre-Roman Italic tribes, she was also the patroness of passages from the earthly world to the afterlife, and was immortalized as such by Virgil. The visit is interesting, but the sulfurous air must be taken seriously, so don't get too close to the geysers."
Tony Renzulli
"A "hellish" place also described in some of Virgil's writings as a gateway to the underworld. Located in Irpinia, not far from the town of Rocca San Felice, it is a small, bubbling pool that emits gaseous fumes of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid, both smelly and dangerous. Be very careful, don't get too close. If you're really curious, go, but cover your face well to avoid breathing, and don't stay there long. The pool is tiny, and the stench is unbearable."
