"Sant’Andrea della Valle: Rome’s Baroque Showstopper, dedicated to St. Andrew - A brief overview
One of the Eternal City’s most magnificent testaments to 17th-century grandeur. Sant’Andrea della Valle is a masterpiece of Baroque art, famous for its colossal dome and deep historical ties to St. Andrew the Apostle!
The Story Behind the Splendor:
Architectural Relay: The project was a relay race of Baroque masters, with initial work by Giacomo della Porta, followed by Carlo Maderno (who designed the massive dome), and the elaborate facade completed by Carlo Rainaldi.
St. Andrew in the Spotlight: The church is a stunning tribute to its namesake. The apse and high altar area are covered in scenes from the life and martyrdom of St. Andrew.
Look above the main altar to find large paintings by Mattia Preti depicting the “Martyrdom of Saint Andrew”, showing his crucifixion.
In the vault of the apse, frescoes by Domenichino illustrate events like “The Call of Peter and Andrew” and “St. Andrew Being Shown his Cross”.
A striking white stucco sculpture by Antonio Raggi shows St. Andrew ascending to heaven, pointing towards the golden dome above.
Opera & History: Beyond the art, the church houses the tombs of two Piccolomini Popes This church is also the final resting place for two actual popes! The beautiful Renaissance funeral monuments of Pope Pius II and his nephew Pope Pius III are housed here.Originally, their bodies and monuments were located in Old St. Peter’s Basilica.
In 1614, during the demolition and rebuilding of St. Peter’s, their tombs were transferred to the new Sant’Andrea della Valle, a church commissioned by the same Piccolomini family, bringing them “home” in a way! and is the famous setting for Act I of Puccini’s opera Tosca!
From the soaring dome, the second tallest in Rome, to the intricate depictions of its patron saint’s life, this basilica is a true architectural marvel.

"Basilica Sant'Andrea della Valle is absolutely breathtaking. What a beautiful church and a fantastic place to visit. The moment you walk inside, you are struck by the stunning ceiling, incredible architecture, and the overall atmosphere—it is truly awe-inspiring.

The priests here are wonderful as well. I had the opportunity to speak with one of them, and he was very friendly, spoke English and Italian fluently, and took the time to share the history of the church with me. It made the experience even more meaningful.

A visit to Sant'Andrea della Valle is absolutely worthwhile when you are in Rome. Highly recommended."
