I was literally walking with my mom in Villa Borghese, in a beautiful garden in Rome and I immediately recognize the fountain. Stopped by and watched videos I recently shot in Libya 🇱🇾! SAME, exactly the same. 🇮🇹🇱🇾 I had no idea of the existence of the same in Italy! I guess it’s meant to be that Libya is always around me 😂😉 #libya #italy #libia #italia #rome #tripoli #roma #ليبيا #seahorse #fo...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Fontana dei Cavalli Marini a beautiful and charming feature within the expansive Villa Borghese gardens. While some note it's less grand than other Roman fountains, its unique sea-horse sculptures and peaceful setting are highly appreciated, especially during quieter morning visits.

"The entire park is wonderful. Make sure to stop here at the fountain of the seahorses--it is beautiful.
We visited the park in the morning in November and had the fountain (and almost the whole park) to ourselves!
Since the Trevi Fountain is being cleaned we threw our penny here guaranteeing a return to Italy!"

Nikki Rohde (OutThisDoor)

"This is a peculiar fountain built in the late 18th-century. It features four sea horses surrounding the base. They have horse heads and front hooves along with fish bodies and intertwined tails, holding up a basin above their heads upon which is a smaller chalice shaped fountain spouting water. Water spills from the middle basin and water spouts from the sea horse hooves into a ground level basin.

Also known as the Sea-horse fountain, it is a playful fountain worth taking a few minutes to enjoy if you plan to explore the garden and park grounds around Borghese."

Brad

"The gardens of the Villa Borghese are awash (sorry, I couldn't resist!) with fountains.

My own favourite is the charming 18th century Fontana dei Cavalli Marini (Fountain of the Seahorses)."

Artistic Inspiration and Design

The Fontana dei Cavalli Marini, or Fountain of the Seahorses, is a testament to neoclassical artistry, designed by the 18th-century painter and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi. TikTok The fountain's most striking feature is its central sculpture: four mythical sea creatures, blending horse heads and hooves with fish bodies and tails. These unique beings support the main basin, from which water gracefully spills into a lower basin. Reddit

This playful yet elegant design reflects the artistic sensibilities of its era, incorporating mythological elements into functional water features. While some reviews suggest it's 'remarkably unremarkable' compared to Rome's grander fountains, its charm lies in its unique artistry and its serene setting within Villa Borghese. It's a piece that invites closer inspection and appreciation for its detailed craftsmanship. Reddit
