"The Fontana delle Rane (Frog Fountain) is located in Rome's Quartiere XVII (Trieste), in the center of the charming Piazza Mincio, in the area commonly known as "Coppedè."

This fascinating place takes its name from its "creator," the talented and eclectic Florentine architect Luigi Coppedè (1866–1927).

It's always exciting to note, as often happens, that the places I've included on Google Maps have already been described by others before I've even written a review myself, a sign that certain places have a soul that deserves to be shared.

HISTORY BRIEF:

Designed in 1920 and built in 1924, it is an elaborate neo-Baroque composition that fits in well with the more important and ancient fountains in the historic center, such as the Tortoise Fountain in Piazza Mattei, designed by Giacomo della Porta and completed by Bernini, of which it bears some resemblance.

Coppedè, with his artistic vision, reinterpreted these models with a fairytale and theatrical touch.

ARCHITECTURE:

The Fountain of the Frogs is a scenographic composition that unfolds on multiple levels:
• At the base, a circular basin welcomes the visitor.
• In the center, a pillar supports a second basin, also circular.
• On the upper edge stand eight frogs, from which jets of water gush, accompanied by a more powerful central jet.
• Around the pillar, four valves are supported by figures of fishermen with nets, each with a frog spraying water.
The result is a harmonious play of water that enchants both adults and children.

FUN FACT: DID YOU KNOW THAT...?

The Coppedè neighborhood, despite being part of Rome's urban fabric, seems to have emerged from a fantasy novel: decorated arches, gargoyles, mosaics, medieval turrets, and Art Nouveau elements coexist in a dreamlike atmosphere.

"The Fontana delle Rane (or Frog Fountain) is located in Rome's Coppedè neighborhood, specifically in Piazza Mincio.
It is the neighborhood's focal point, known for its eclectic, fairytale-like architectural style. The fountain, designed by architect Gino Coppedè between 1921 and 1924, is a small but evocative circular basin with an elegant central structure culminating in a chalice.
Its distinctive decorative elements: the edge of the basin is adorned with a series of twelve frogs pouring water into the basin, while at the center is a sculptural group of two embracing figures (sometimes identified as fauns or mythological figures) surrounded by a small mosaic.
It is also famous for an anecdote: it is said that the Beatles bathed in it fully clothed after a concert in the nearby Parioli neighborhood in 1965."
