Reviews Summary
Giardinetto del Monte Oppio is lauded as a hidden gem offering stunning, less-crowded views of the Colosseum. Visitors appreciate its peaceful atmosphere and recent renovation, making it ideal for photography and a moment of tranquility. However, some note that sunset can be busy, and midday lighting requires careful management for photos.
"One of the best hidden spots near the Colosseum!
Giardinetto del Monte Oppio was renovated in 2019 and turned into a small peaceful garden with a beautiful side view of the Colosseum. I often bring my clients here when it’s quiet especially early in the morning.
Sunset looks beautiful here, but it’s actually crowded at that time.
If you want fewer people and better light, early morning is definitely the best.
Important note for photographers:
The light here is tricky. Around noon especially in summer the sun is too harsh and causes strong contrast. The ground also reflects light back under the chin, which gives an unflattering effect in photos.
Cloudy weather is ideal for shooting in this spot. If you’re stuck with strong sunlight, using flash helps to fix the contrast.
Be careful with your belongings, especially in the afternoon. There are often pickpockets around.
The garden opens in the early morning and closes at sunset.
As a local photographer, I really enjoy using this location when timed right, it offers a unique and iconic background of the Colosseum…"

"The best hidden spot to take pictures with the Colosseum. It is also not crowded most of the time so you will have enough time to take different pictures here. You basically walk up next to the Colosseum up some stairs and you will find an entrance to this public spot."

"This spot offers truly stunning photos of the Colosseum! There were street performers playing music, which created a fantastic atmosphere. Being able to enjoy pizza while taking in the beautiful view of the Colosseum was an unforgettable experience."

The Colosseum's Quiet Neighbor
The garden's renovation in 2019 has transformed it into a pleasant green space. It’s a testament to how even well-trodden cities like Rome can hide delightful, less-obvious gems. The strategic positioning allows for postcard-perfect shots of the Colosseum, making it a favorite for photographers looking to capture the monument without the usual throngs of tourists.
While the views are the main draw, the garden itself offers a moment of calm. It’s a place to sit, reflect, and enjoy a different angle of the ancient world. Photography Hotspot: Tips from the Pros
However, the lighting can be tricky. Local photographers advise that midday sun, especially in summer, creates harsh contrasts and can lead to unflattering shadows due to light reflecting off the ground. Cloudy days are considered ideal, or photographers might need to employ a flash to balance the light and mitigate strong shadows.
Despite the lighting considerations, the garden remains a highly recommended spot for its unique perspective. It's a place where you can get creative with angles and compositions, capturing the Colosseum in a way that feels both grand and intimate. The key is to be mindful of the time of day and weather conditions to maximize the photographic potential.
