Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Oratorio del Gonfalone for its stunning Mannerist frescoes and excellent acoustics, making it an ideal venue for intimate concerts. Many recommend attending a performance to fully experience its artistic and musical richness. Some find it less compelling if visited without a specific event.

"Not to be confused with the Church of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone, which is nearby with address 12 Via dei Banchi Vecchi.

Probably best to book a concert, rather than just a tour, as you basically get free access to the venue in addition to the concert.

The Oratory of the Banner has been called the Sistine Chapel of Mannerism. Completed in 1576, the walls are frescoed with scenes of the Passion by the top Mannerist painters of the time. The chapel was built for the Confraternity of the Banner, a Catholic group of penitents.

I saw a chamber music group play a selection of Italian baroque concertos, which was magical to hear in that space."

"Nice acoustics in beautiful hall for a wonderful concert (originally built for church).
Walk past this little concert hall (from about 1570) and look at the door and check out if there are concerts here. We have been lucky for 3 thursdays in a row with world-class musicians. Our photos show beautiful paintings on all walls from around 1570.
October 2018 we went for Concerto Aperitivo sunday at 11 o'clock. Koncert and afterwards aperitivo and sandwich in the beautiful cellar. We can recommend this Sunday events very much. Always high quality music."

Tom Malling

"A hidden gem well worth booking a reservation and making a short detour to see the extraordinary frescoes. A full cycle dedicated to depicting the Passion of Christ from the last decades of the 16th century by some of the finest living masters: Jacopo Bertoja, Luccio Agresti, Federico Zuccari, Cesare Nebbia and Marco Pino."

The Artistry of Mannerism

Mannerism is characterized by its elongated figures, complex compositions, and unusual color palettes. The frescoes here, completed in 1576, are a prime example, showcasing dramatic scenes of Christ's Passion with intense emotion and dynamic movement. Reddit

Painters like Jacopo Bertoja, Luccio Agresti, Federico Zuccari, Cesare Nebbia, and Marco Pino contributed to this monumental cycle. Their work reflects the Counter-Reformation's emphasis on vivid religious narratives designed to inspire piety and awe.
