Reviews Summary

Visitors praise San Pietro in Montorio for its serene atmosphere, stunning Renaissance architecture, particularly Bramante's Tempietto, and breathtaking panoramic views of Rome. The historical significance, including the tombs of Irish earls, adds a unique depth to the experience, making it a rewarding visit away from the main tourist trails.

"Beautiful small church with a great deal of fascinating paintings. Because it's somewhat removed from the tourist hubs, it's a tranquil place to enjoy the art and atmosphere."

Sanne Boonstra

"Visitors often come to San Pietro in Montorio for its splendid view over Rome, its serene hilltop setting on the Janiculum, or to admire Bramante’s exquisite Tempietto, that perfect jewel of Renaissance architecture standing in the courtyard. Few, however, suspect that within this quiet church lies the resting place of a man whose story shaped the fate of a nation.

Beneath the floor before the high altar is the tomb of Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone—the “would-be King of Ireland.” One fine October day my friend noticed a fresh wreath laid upon the simple stone slab, bearing the words: “In Loving Memory of O’Neill, the Chicago Labor Group.” It was an unexpected token of remembrance, linking Rome, Chicago, and Ireland across four centuries.

That same day, my friend encountered a visiting Irish scholar kneeling nearby. Though not the one who had placed the wreath, he carried with him the story that it silently proclaimed. He told her of the Flight of the Earls (1607): when O’Neill and O’Donnell, defeated and stripped of their ancestral lands after the Nine Years’ War, sailed from Lough Swilly to seek aid from Catholic Europe. Once allies of King Philip II of Spain, they wandered through broken promises and dashed hopes until, at last, they reached Rome under the protection of Pope Paul V.

Here their earthly journey ended. Both earls died not long after their arrival, and were buried in this church, far from the hills of Ulster. Their graves remain before the altar: a quiet Roman resting place for Ireland’s exiled lords.

San Pietro in Montorio is worth visiting for its beauty alone—but for those who love Irish history, or who sense the drama of Christendom’s intertwined stories, it holds something more. Here, in stone and silence, a forgotten chapter of Ireland’s destiny lies waiting to be discovered."

Fr Joseph Hudson

"After the long climb, i found that the main church was closed, but I did go to see the small chapel in the courtyard.tit It still has the original floor. The views are spectacular."
