Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Santa Sabina for its profound historical significance, particularly its remarkably preserved 5th-century wooden doors and beautiful mosaics. Many find the basilica to be a peaceful sanctuary, offering a serene escape from Rome's busier tourist sites. Some note that while beautiful, it's a more understated experience compared to larger, more ornate churches.

"A very very old Christian church dating back 2000 years. Built in a Roman style, it doesn't have all the decorative trimmings of the very ornate Catholic churches that were built much later.

It has both a simple interior and exterior and is a stunning example of a church of this age.

The gardens adjoining the church are filled with fragrant orange trees and the view is amazing.

The timber ceiling as you enter is incredible, as is the mosaic piece of a Monk, which is roped off and covered by perspex in the centre of the church."

Samantha Platt

"The patron saint of the temple is St. Sabina, a Roman patrician who was martyred for the Christian faith in the 2nd century. The doors of the main portal are made of cypress wood, and these are the original doors of the temple dated between 420 and 450. These doors were originally decorated with 28 bas-relief panels depicting biblical scenes, 18 of which have survived to the present day. The subsequent panels depict (from top to bottom and from left to right): the crucifixion, women at the empty tomb, the worship of the three kings, Christ with St. Peter and Paul, the raising of Lazarus, Moses in the desert, the ascension, the second coming (or triumph) of Christ, the appearance of Jesus after the resurrection to the disciples, the appearance of Jesus after the resurrection to the women, the announcement of St. Peter, the prophet Habakkuk with an angel, Moses receiving the law, homage paid to an important person, the Israelites with the pillar of fire, Elijah ascending to heaven, St. Peter washing his hands, Christ before Caiaphas. The crucifixion scene on the door is probably one of the oldest examples of such representation in art"

Tobiasz R

"Very old temple, preserved in its minimalistic/monastic style, practically without any of the typical Roman baroque exaggerations. A pleasure to see."
