What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Sanctuary of Santa Marina Ruggiano as a small, well-maintained jewel with exquisite frescoes and a unique statue. The stunning sunset views on its carparo facade are a highlight, and the genuine hospitality of the locals enhances the experience. However, some find the lack of clear opening hours and visiting information a drawback.
"The Sanctuary Church of Santa Marina is a small jewel of medieval origin, expanded in the 17th century in full Baroque style. The site is clean and well-maintained, but unfortunately, there are no clear indications regarding opening hours and visiting methods: a detail that would make the experience much simpler and more accessible for visitors."

"I love visiting the Sanctuary of Santa Marina in the small town of Ruggiano, a hamlet of Salve just steps from the sea, especially at sunset, when the sun glows red on its carparo façade, the hard Lecce stone used to build the buildings. Inside, there are exquisite frescoes. And if you're lucky, a local resident will faithfully and devoutly tell you about the life of Santa Marina. The Sanctuary is surrounded by an extraordinary landscape: beaches with desert-colored sand and azure sea, with dunes covered in wild lilies; Torre Pali, whose base is entirely in the sea; Posto Vecchio; the Pescoluse; and the village of Salve, with its characteristic historic center and the church dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Great, the town's patron saint. The simple, yet intensely flavorful, cuisine is amazing. But what will strike you most is the hospitality of the people of Salve, who, with great kindness and without ulterior motives, will welcome you as one of their own and make you want to become a full-fledged resident."

"The Sanctuary, located in the Ruggero hamlet of the municipality of Salve in the province of Lecce, is dedicated to the cult of Saint Marina, a Christian martyr beheaded for her faith. The building, constructed of Lecce stone, was built between the 7th and 10th centuries AD and underwent numerous restorations in 1648. Inside, numerous frescoes remain well preserved."
