Reviews Summary

Sabbioneta is widely praised as a beautifully preserved Renaissance 'ideal city' and a UNESCO World Heritage site, with visitors admiring its unique urban planning, the Teatro all'Antica, and the Palazzo Ducale. However, some reviewers note limitations such as midday museum closures, restricted access to certain areas like the walls, and a perceived lack of extensive furnishings in some palaces.

"Beautiful town to visit, an ideal city for Vespasiano Gonzaga who conceived it and built it according to the criteria of his era. Many well-preserved artefacts remain, including the fortified walls. It's a shame not to be able to visit them in full by walking over them, which is hindered by vegetation. The two squares where the most important buildings are located, Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo Giardino, are spectacular. An absolutely must-do visit, together with the Teatro all'Antica, a gem of architecture. Not to be missed is the Church of the Incoronata with its singular octagonal plan."

Fabrizio Brescianini

"The only positive thing is the super friendly employee at the tourist office. It's a small town and very remote. The museums close from 1 to 2:30 pm for lunch! The Teatro Olimpico is beautiful but much smaller than the one in Vicenza. The garden museum was closed for an exhibition. The Palazzo Ducale has beautiful ceilings, but otherwise there's no furniture, just a few equestrian statues and an exhibition of non-original Renaissance clothing. The Incoronata church is beautiful. The synagogue is small but could be interesting. The Oratory of San Rocco, as the name suggests, is an oratory. The name Pinacoteca... I'm not judging it. The Museo del Ducato mainly features sacred vestments and surprisingly school nativity scenes. The only positive note is a delightful planted courtyard. The walls are not accessible except for a few meters. Frankly, one wonders how it can be a UNESCO World Heritage site."

Paola Conti

"We decided to visit this UNESCO World Heritage town.
We arrived around 3 pm and luckily found a guide who was leaving with a group of tourists, so we tagged along. Two adults and one child, price €56.
A 2-hour tour where we visited the Doge's Palace
The ancient theater
Palazzo Giardino
The synagogue
Everything was very beautiful and interesting. The only downside was the disappointment of not being able to admire the Palazzo Giardino gallery, which was empty, as it was hosting an exhibition of paintings of undeniable taste... 18 years old.
Otherwise, it's a beautiful, well-kept town rich in history."
