"A portion (a wall) is all that remains of one of the two main early medieval monasteries in central and southern Italy.
It housed one of the largest libraries in the Mediterranean. It was destroyed in 1480 by Ahmed Pasha's Ottoman army during the siege of Otranto. Unfortunately, a similar fate befell the other monastery (San Vincenzo al Volturno), of which only the foundations and the splendid frescoed Crypt of Epiphanius remain.
It's a shame that today not even a small street sign indicates the presence of the remains of what was a bastion of early medieval Christian culture."
