"If it weren't for its state of total abandonment, the Medici Fortress of Sansepolcro could be considered the symbolic monument of Piero della Francesca's city. Designed and built by Giuliano da Sangallo, it long defended the village, located on the border of Tuscany under the Medici. I was among the lucky few who managed to visit it about 25 years ago, but unfortunately the Fortress is now privately owned and not accessible.
The structure is severely damaged, some parts are at risk of collapse; the citizens have been hoping for years, in vain, for the restoration and enhancement of what could represent a unique tourist attraction for the city and the entire Tiber Valley."
