"This was our first stop in Brindisi, as we were entering it from north. This beautiful early 14 c Church stands literally by the airport fence behind, just after the rental car park. Probably the strangest location for a Church I've ever seen.
Santa Maria del Casale was built in early 14 c in a Romanesque style with some early Gothic features that were coming in style. Allegedly it was built on a spot where St. Francis made a stop on his way back from the Holy Land, no airport around these days :-)
The interior hides beautiful 14c Byzantine style frescoes. We were the only visitors which added to our impression.
Free entry and parking in front, do come and visit"

A Unique Architectural Setting

Santa Maria del Casale Church presents a fascinating architectural paradox due to its location. Built in the early 14th century, it exhibits a blend of Romanesque and early Gothic features, reflecting the transitional period in architectural styles. The facade is noted as magnificent, hinting at the grandeur within. Reddit

However, its most striking characteristic is its proximity to the Brindisi airport. This unusual placement, nestled between modern airport facilities and former military camps, makes it a discreet yet unforgettable landmark. The church's sober interior, composed of a single nave and a Latin cross plan, contrasts with the richness of its frescoes, creating a powerful spiritual and aesthetic experience. Reddit

The church is also steeped in legend, with an anecdote suggesting it was built on a spot where St. Francis made a stop on his journey back from the Holy Land. While the airport was certainly not present in his time, this tale adds a layer of historical and spiritual significance to the site. Reddit
