What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Sirmione is lauded for its stunning beauty, particularly the Scaliger Castle and Catullus Caves, offering a picturesque medieval and Roman experience. However, visitors frequently warn of extreme crowds, especially during peak hours, which can detract from the enjoyment and lead to frustrating experiences with crowd management. Prices in some shops and restaurants are also noted as being on the higher side.
"Very beautiful Sirmione, everything perfect without any hitches at the Catullus caves and the Scaliger Castle with entrances no later than 10/11 in the morning, following these times it becomes a "carnage", we wanted to leave through the entrance of the Castle at 3pm and it took us 20 minutes before crossing the threshold with a crowd that I didn't find even at the Colosseum in Rome. The local police continued to let people into the village taking into account that there were several hundred people inside who just wanted to leave...Local organization aimed only at its own gain and not at tourists"
Loris Pelizzoni
"A nice little village near Sirmione, but it's a shame that some of the shops and restaurants have slightly inflated prices."

"Beautiful location, crowded but in the right way, not like Sirmione where you can't move"

Exploring the Historic Heart: Sirmione Peninsula
Navigating the narrow, cobblestone streets of Sirmione's old town requires comfortable footwear. While the main attractions are a must-see, simply wandering through the charming alleys, browsing the shops, and enjoying the lakeside atmosphere is a significant part of the experience. Be prepared for significant crowds, particularly between 10 AM and 3 PM, as one reviewer noted it was more crowded than the Colosseum. The local organization has been criticized for prioritizing profit over tourist experience during peak times.
For those seeking a slightly less frenetic experience, the eastern side of the peninsula, including Lugana di Sirmione, offers a more relaxed lakeside ambiance. This area is also the gateway to exploring the renowned Lugana wine region.
The Charm of Lugana di Sirmione: Wine and Lakeside Bliss
The true allure of Lugana lies in its world-renowned white wine. Wineries like Ca' dei Frati and Cantina Avanzi open their doors to visitors for tours and tastings, offering an intimate experience of the winemaking process and the unique terroir. These visits are highly recommended for wine enthusiasts looking to savor the crisp, elegant flavors of Lugana. Many local trattorias and restaurants in Lugana also proudly feature Lugana wines, providing an authentic taste of the region.
Lugana di Sirmione also serves as an excellent base for exploring the southern shores of Lake Garda. Its picturesque vineyards and proximity to the lake create a beautiful backdrop for a relaxing holiday. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply seeking a peaceful lakeside escape, Lugana offers a delightful experience away from the main tourist throngs.
Navigating Crowds and Timing Your Visit
Beyond the main attractions, the narrow streets of the old town can become gridlocked with people, making movement difficult. If you're visiting during peak season, consider exploring Lugana di Sirmione, which offers a more relaxed lakeside experience with beautiful promenades and beaches. Weekday evenings can also offer a more subdued atmosphere compared to weekend afternoons.
For a truly immersive experience without the peak-hour crush, visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) is highly advised. The weather is generally pleasant, and the number of tourists significantly decreases, allowing for a more enjoyable exploration of Sirmione and its surroundings.
