"This doorway is a charming feature of the small town of Saturnia, perfectly framing the view of the arch down the cobbled street. While much of the visible structure is a medieval restoration, its original Roman influence is undeniable.
The paved road you walk on faithfully follows the ancient Roman path, with clear remnants of large slabs and sidewalk blocks.
The most impressive historical detail is the prominent section of the original polygonal city wall beneath the Ciacci Fortress. These walls, likely dating to the colonial foundation (186 BC), reveal that the city was planned to be much larger than the developed town you see today."

Saturnia was first an Etruscan settlement (its original name may have been Aurinia). The Romans re-founded it as a colony in 183 BC. The walls you see today combine Etruscan megalithic blocks with Roman and medieval rebuilding. You can still find polygonal stonework (large irregular blocks fitted without mortar), a hallmark of pre-Roman and early Roman fortifications."
