"Rating 9.0: Legend, History, and Culture—this is the Rovigliano Rock.
The Rovigliano Rock is located in the province of Naples, near the mouth of the Sarno River, in the town of Rovigliano, on the border between Castellammare di Stabia and Torre Annunziata.
👉A bit of History (source Wikipedia) Originally called Petra Herculis, legend has it that Hercules, returning from Spain from the tenth of his twelve labors, before founding the cities of Herculaneum and Stabiae, severed the peak of Mount Faito and hurled it into the sea, thus forming the islet. During the Roman era, a temple dedicated to Hercules stood on it, of which a piece of wall made of opus reticulatum remains today. It was later also called Pliny's Stone, as the writer Gaius Pliny Secundus died during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD near the rock. The first document attesting to its current name dates back to the time of Pope Innocent III, who in a papal bull mentions the locality of Rubellanium, now Rovigliano, as the border between the dioceses of Naples and Nola. According to archaeologists, the name derives either from the surname of an ancient Roman family, the gens Rubilia, or from the consul Rubelio, owner of the rock, or from the Latin term robilia, meaning the legume plant, similar to grass peas, that grew abundantly in the area of the ager. Over the centuries, it assumed various functions: in the 6th century, it became a private residence; in the 9th century, it passed into the ownership of Ernesto Longobardi, who transformed it into a shelter for young women dedicated to monastic life; in the 12th century, it became a Cistercian monastery and church; and finally, in the 16th century, it became a fortress to defend against Saracen raids, with a tower built on top, still visible today. In 1860, the rock became state property; In 1931, a restaurant opened, but it had little success, closing shortly thereafter. Only a few ruins of the tower remain, on degraded slopes.
👉 Geology
The Rovigliano rock has a geological structure similar to that of the Lattari Mountains, consisting of sedimentary rocks, primarily limestone and dolomite. It is also possible that the island was formed following the collapse of an ancient mountain, of which it represents the summit: the collapse could have occurred following the collision of the African and Eurasian plates, an event that also led to the formation of the Campanian plain.
Until the 3rd century, the islet was about four miles from the coast, a distance that has been significantly reduced over the years due to sediments from volcanic eruptions and debris that accumulated at the mouth of the Sarno River."

"The view could be truly wonderful. It's a shame about the filth, the bad smell, and the suspicious people wandering around. As a Neapolitan, it breaks my heart to see such beautiful places abandoned like this..."
Alessandro Bernardi
"Beautiful view. The surrounding area is home to fishing and maritime companies, so it's not very clean. If the community would give it a little attention, it would be great, as the view is wonderful for spending time."
