"Great advanced hike assuming going to the top. Bring water, sunscreen, proper hiking shoes, snacks and fully charged phone. Enjoy!!!"

Travel Girl

"Amazing views. A tough steep climb up a not very well marked track. Don't park in the town, park nearer the start of the trail - the climb from the town is up a series of steep, irregular steps."

Peter Blow

"Really nice place to hike and visit to see the entire western section of the peninsula and Capri. The path is narrow and, in some places, very steep. From the road to a rocky outcrop near the summit, it's a good 500m of ascent.
Coming down from that area, back to the road and a Christian Cross, is again narrow and a bit tricky in places. There is plenty of volcanic ash stones (very light and porous) all over the path near the top. Makes it quite slippery. Lots of wildlife to look out for."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Challenge and Reward of the Ascent

The Sentiero dei Tre Colli is renowned for its steep incline, a significant part of its appeal and challenge. Hikers describe it as a tough climb, with one reviewer noting a 500m ascent from a road to a rocky outcrop near the summit. This demanding nature means you'll definitely break a sweat, but the payoff is immense. The trail's path is often narrow and can be tricky, particularly as you get closer to the top. The presence of volcanic ash stones, while adding to the unique terrain, can also make sections slippery, requiring careful footing.

The reward for this effort is the unparalleled 360-degree panorama. From the summit, you can soak in sweeping views of the entire western section of the Amalfi Coast, with iconic sights like Positano and the island of Capri laid out before you. This breathtaking vista is consistently highlighted as the primary reason to undertake the hike, making the challenging ascent feel entirely worthwhile. It’s a true test of endurance rewarded with some of the most spectacular scenery the region has to offer.

Travelers emphasize the importance of being well-prepared for this climb. Essential items include plenty of water, sunscreen, and sturdy hiking shoes. Some also mention the presence of flies, suggesting that bug spray can be a useful addition to your packing list. The trail is generally well-marked, but its steep and sometimes uneven nature means that vigilance and proper gear are key to a safe and enjoyable experience.

Navigating the Trail and Parking

Getting to and navigating the Sentiero dei Tre Colli requires a bit of local knowledge. While the trail itself is described as fairly well-marked, the approach and parking can be a point of confusion for first-time visitors. A common piece of advice from hikers is to avoid parking directly in the town. This might seem convenient, but it leads to an additional, very steep climb up a series of irregular steps before you even reach the main hiking path. Instead, travelers recommend finding parking closer to the actual start of the trail for a more direct and less arduous beginning to your hike.

The trail's character is defined by its narrowness and steepness. In some places, the path is quite challenging, demanding concentration and good balance. The terrain near the top is particularly noteworthy, featuring a lot of light, porous volcanic ash stones. While this creates a unique landscape, it also contributes to slipperiness, especially after rain or if the path is dry and loose. This means that sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are not just recommended, but essential for safety and comfort.

Beyond the physical aspects, the trail offers opportunities to observe local wildlife, adding another layer of interest to the hike. The combination of challenging terrain, stunning views, and natural encounters makes the Sentiero dei Tre Colli a memorable experience for those prepared to tackle its demands. Remember to carry all your essentials, as there are no facilities along the route.
