What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Basilica of San Domenico for its historical significance, particularly its connection to Saint Catherine of Siena and the relics housed within. The austere Gothic architecture is noted for creating a serene and reverent atmosphere, making it a beautiful place for quiet contemplation. While not as ornate as Siena's Duomo, its unique historical importance and spiritual ambiance are highly appreciated.
"This is the place where Saint Catherine of Siena — one of the patron saints of Italy — used to pray during her lifetime. It was also from here that she set out for France, determined to persuade the Pope to return to Rome and restore the papacy to the Vatican. Sadly, she passed away in Rome and never had the chance to come back to her beloved hometown.
However, part of her sacred relics is preserved here. I’ve also visited her other relics in the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome and in another shrine in Venice — the last two photos show those places.
Saint Catherine was a woman of great compassion and remarkable courage."

"I stopped by this church during my visit to Siena and spent a short moment in prayer. The basilica is closely connected to Saint Catherine of Siena, and you can feel that history as soon as you walk in. Part of her relics are kept here, and it is one of the main places associated with her life.
What stood out to me the most was the sunlight coming through the stained glass windows. It created such a calm and beautiful atmosphere that it made the visit feel especially meaningful. Quiet, peaceful, and definitely worth a stop if you are in Siena."
